Cynthia, Aged 12, Ghana
12-year-old Cynthia* is receiving treatment at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana.
I thought she wouldn’t survive.”
Maria* was devastated when her daughter, Cynthia, was diagnosed with Wilm’s Tumour when she was just six years old.
I woke up one day and noticed a swelling in Cynthia’s abdomen and rushed her to a clinic nearby.”
Following the clinic visit, Cynthia was admitted to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment. Her siblings had to drop out of school because there was no money for her treatment.
I was told Cynthia would not survive so I shouldn’t waste time and resources. My husband lost hope and was not willing to help. Her siblings would cry when she was sick.”
World Child Cancer has been working with hospitals such as Korle-Bu in Ghana to provide cancer treatment and care to children, as well as support to their families.
“World Child Cancer provided us with the necessary drug and diagnostic support as well as accommodation and transport whenever we came to the hospital for treatment. A doctor encouraged me that my child would be well again. Things are better, Cynthia goes to the hospital for only yearly reviews now. Without the support I received, I would not be able to provide her with the necessary treatment.”
Cynthia is in school and enjoys reading and drawing with friends.
The hardest thing for me was taking chemotherapy drugs because I would vomit and wouldn’t be able to eat. At home I enjoy playing with my siblings. I would like to be a doctor when I grow up.”
