Improving childhood cancer care in Ghana through specialist nurse training

Last week we celebrated the first graduates from the specialist Paediatric Oncology Nursing Programme in Ghana

We are delighted to announce that the first specialist Paediatric Oncology Nursing Programme in Ghana has just finished, and last week, 17 participants completed and passed the programme, and were inducted as Associate Members of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives.

The students came from the two principal treatment centres in Korle Bu and Kumasi, as well as the ‘shared care’ centres of Tamale, Cape Coast and Agogo.

The Paediatric Oncology Nursing Associate programme is the first in Sub Saharan Africa and will strengthen the multidisciplinary team for childhood cancer management in major treatment centres and shared care centres in Ghana. This will help Ghana accelerate the achievement of the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC) goal of increasing childhood cancer survival rate to at least 60% by 2030.

Ayire Adongo, World Child Cancer Programme Lead for Sub Saharan Africa

The programme was a collaboration between World Child Cancer and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives with an international coalition of partners including Boston Children’s Hospital, and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, with invaluable early support from SickKids in Toronto, and funding from UBS Optimus Foundation.
